ACADEMICS
Takoma Academy provides rigorous academic instruction in the core content areas for grades 9-12. We ensure that our students meet the NAD standards through our standards based learning program. To ensure an equitable, engaging academic experience for all students, our teachers receive content and pedagogical professional development and resources that are grounded in research to build their capacity to meet the needs of our scholars.
Social Studies
The social studies standards reflect multiple perspectives from diverse civic and social communities. They provide meaningful, enjoyable connections within social studies content areas, as well as connections with other fields of learning. The intent is to focus on the essence of what students should learn, retain and apply to their lives.
Foreign Language
The foreign language standards and curriculum provide practical tools for academic instruction. Students achieve competence and are engaged successfully in understanding written and oral communication in a foreign language. Students learn the connection between language and culture, and the enrichment in human expression of information, ideas and emotions in other languages.
Health & Physical Education
Our health and PE curriculum helps students to reflect God’s image while developing proficiency in different aspects of health education—cognitive health literacy, and promoting responsible choices for healthy living. This kind of education imparts more than academic knowledge, it promotes life-long learning about wellness.
Music
Music education standards are a practical tool to assist teachers in focusing their instruction so that students achieve competence and are engaged ethically in utilizing and applying music in practical life situations. The standards reflect an appreciation for God’s gift of music as a source of personal enrichment, as a means for constructive expression of human emotions, as an essential aspect of worship, as well as a unique intellectual discipline.

Art
The art standards lead to instruction that helps students appreciate the richness of artistic expression, develop an emerging interest and skill in creating art, and assist in making informed artistic choices which will influence them throughout their lives. Instruction in art from this type of curriculum should help students learn to see and reflect God’s image while developing proficiency in the areas of visual arts education—applying skills and techniques, creating and communicating, understanding cultural and historical connections, evaluating and deriving meaning, and in applications to life situations.
Religion
Instruction in Bible courses will incorporate the beliefs, values and mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church through a variety of “head, heart, and hand experiences.” These standards should help students learn to see and reflect God’s image through understanding, applying and responding to the Holy Scriptures
